Year 2: List Article- Writing for Online.

The 3 funniest British comedians of the noughties.

Here is the review of what i feel are the 3 funniest British comedians of the noughties.

Reviewing the 3 funniest comedians of the noughties was no easy task with so many classic comics out there is was difficult to determine which should be on this list and who fell short of making the cut.
The opinions of many may differ on this which is why it is the thoughts of one man and not a poll taking votes over a period of time, or a final selection created based on dvd or book sales.

Third.

Maybe he would not be in most peoples list of the top 3 British comics of the noughties, but no one will ever forget the legend of garlic bread brought into the public limelight by the genius of Bolton Peter Kay.
Although Peter has disappeared from our screens he still has a special place in our hearts for making us laugh, from live stand-up when he first went to the Top of The Tower in Blackpool to his classic Phoenix Nights and the ever popular spin off Max and Paddy Road to Nowhere, Peter Kay still remains a classic icon in British comedy.

Second.

With his big cheesy grin, bouncy hair and classic accent Michael Mcintyre has become a major star since he first hit our screens in 1999 he has rocketed to the very top of his game releasing his first DVD Live and Laughing in 2008 and shortly followed by his second DVD Hello Wembley, the result of his massive sellout UK tour where he performed to a staggering 500,000 people.

2009 saw him take the award for Best Live Stand-up which secured his place as a comic legend in British history, what the future holds for this man is unknown, with his hand in so many areas from guest appearances, live stand-up and his own tv show i personally cant wait to see what he give’s the public next.

First.

This man clearly needs no introduction, probably the most influential stand-up comic of the noughties Lee Evans has performed to thousands upon thousands of fans at some of the biggest venues across the UK. With multiple DVD’s and books on sale he, along with our other great comics has secured a place in stand-up history, however as for Mr Evans, he is at the height of his career and still climbing to the very top, his 2011 tour is set to be his biggest yet.
The sweating over active Lee has clearly taken the number one spot and it, i believe will take someone of such skill to take the crown away from the comic king that it wont happen until Lee feels his time is up in the world of comedy.

Reflection- I must say i rather enjoyed this workshop which i believe has something to do with the fact i enjoy reading list article’s which i stumble across on the internet or in newspapers/magazines.
Going through a workshop of what it takes to write one, what they consist of and the possible subject area’s for the article was quite interesting and gave me more insight and idea’s for writing my own.
The mini assignment to write my own was also enjoyable easy but hard at the same time thinking what subject i could use and how to specialise it more, and also what to write about each item on the list.

Year 2: How to Read Images- Textual analysis (Kate Moss task)

Kate Moss
Who or what is the subject?
The subject of the image is quite clear, the subject is two key points 1- Kate Moss, and 2- the drunken public disgrace she showed to the world or more than one occasion.
Who or what else is in the picture?
The photo shows the luxury car she is traveling in, showing that even though she publicly shows her love for drinking and the disgrace she makes of herself that she still is driven around is some of the nicer cars available to celebrities.
This image shows the public her clear love for smoking which can be seen in many of her public appearance photographs, for example when she is out shopping or at a restaurant.
What is happening?
Kate Moss been driven home after a night out.
Environment?
The environment in which the photograph is set is the classic paparazzi style photo of a celebrity sat inside a chauffeur driven car.
What can you see in the background of the picture?
The background of the image consists of the car interior and clearly visible is the flash lighting around the car itself.
How was this lit?
The image is lit by an external or built-in flash.
Where is the focus?
The focus of the photograph is mainly around the face of Kate Moss, with the car interior beginning to blur out due to the depth of field.
Has this image been obviously processed?
No, the image appears to be raw and published as it was shot.
What does the composition tell us?
The composition tells us that the image was taken with urgency as to capture the moment.

Reflection- Todays workshop was a good refresher of last years workshops, due to the summer this was one of the subject area’s which wasn’t as fresh in my mind as it was when we originally discussed it. Going through photographs in a critical manor is an ideal exercise as it draws my attention more to where the publics eye is drawn and the area’s they pick up on more, this allows me to apply the theory more to my own work in an attempt to remove these easily recognisable flaws.

Year 2: Deep Search- reflection

Deep Search- using the boolean syntax.

What is boolean syntax- this is a series of reserved words and symbols called properties, these enable you to search for specific items on the internet.
It allows you to search for key areas within the subject area you require, it also allows you to exclude unwanted search results which are of no use to the subject area.

The first property- ”AND” this allows you to search for 2 or more key words within the subject area you require information on, capitalizing the word ”AND” when using it will automatically search for results containing those key words, for example deconstructing AND photographs- this will then search through google and produce corresponding articles to these key word searches.

The second property- ”OR” this can be used to search for 2 or more keywords, however when the results are returned they will contain one or the other keyword not both in the same article result, i.e. if your search is smoke OR fire then one or the other will be the key aspect of the resulted article with maybe a reference to the other word but the article will be mainly focused on one of the keywords.

Boolean searches- these are ”case sensitive”  search methods which enable you to search further into the web than usually possible with common search methods.

Phrase’s.

Boolean search methods allows you to search for a phrase or sentence by re-typing the quote and using quotation marks.

Exclusion.

Using boolean search methods allows you to search for specific aspects of a subject area and remove the results which are of no reference to what you require. Using the ”-” (minus) symbol allows you to remove certain words from your search to produce the results you require.

Filetype.

This search method is not strictly a boolean property- you can continue your search by using filetype methods to produce specific images with specific filetypes through google.
For example- search for landscapes filetype:jpg.

Site.

Boolean search gives you the option to search a specific website through google, for example- sam taylor site:www.facebook.com using this in the google search bar will produce a specific search for the certain subject from a specific website.

Combination.

All of these Boolean search methods can be combined into a single search to produce very individual results centered around the subject area you wish to focus on.

Task

The task for the workshop consisted of using google to carry out a boolean style search to find a selection of articles/ blogs referring to deconstructing images.

Task results are as follows-
search= journalist AND photo – this produced: http://www.journalistdirectory.com/journalist/

search= photographer OR journalist – this produced a result of
http://www.photographerdb.com

search= deconstructing AND photo – result produced

Workshop Analysis: Student Photographer Interview.

Tutorial with Karl consisted of discussing primary sources for interview techniques, looking at methods of how to interview people and what to ask, looking at the principles of who, what, where, when, why, and how.
Also we looked at secondary sources such as using prior articles, interviews etc and working with pre-recorded material, using such things as newspaper quotes, book quotes, social media references, videos, and film and tv.

InDesign for Issuu and Creative Commons licensing

Did a test run on exporting abilities from InDesign to upload to Issuu today much faster method than trying to upload an original pdf file.

Creative commons is a free licensing site used by artists, photographers, film makers etc.
Spent some time browsing through the site to get more information on the licensing provided by the site and what it can cover.

My research has now lead me to use Creative Commons to license my own work to protect it from copyright infringement, in other words prevent people from using my work and passing it off as their own.

Student Photographer Interview

We have with us today a new on the scene student photographer Mary Baillie. New on the scene with big ideas we get a one to one chance interview with her to see what the ideas behind her latest shoot are and where her inspiration for her work has come from.

Hi Mary and thanks for been here for this interview today, thanks its great to be here

So then where did your inspiration for your latest shoot come from?

I guess you could say the inspiration for my latest shoot was more of a spontaneous moment of thought and i then go through a process of trial and error to see if each idea will work out.

Been more of an on the spot spontaneous idea photographer is there any relation between all of your shoots, do your quick thinking ideas affect how all your work turns out?

There is some relation between my photo’s but i use many different sources of inspiration so in a way each of my photos differ from one to the other as i have different ideas from the start of how i want the photo to look at the end.

where did your latest shoot take place?

I spent time traveling around Wakefield using public transport i feel it has a certain mood to it and a certain mood to the people using it, so i used public transport to travel around the town using the mood felt on the bus and trying to capture it within my work.

Did you do any research of the location prior to the shoot?

It was a spur of the moment choice on where to go for the shoot.

Do you do any kind of post production on your work after completing each shoot?

My latest shoot was taken using a mobile device to give more of a touristy feel to the photos, like as if they were taken without any thought. So my latest shoot was not edited in any way but i do sometimes do some post-production on my work.

Do you like using post-production on your work or do u prefer to leave it as the original RAW image?

I do like to do some post-production work on my photos as i feel no photograph is error free, no matter how small the aspect i edit is i do like to work on them even if it is just to crop out a small aspect of the photo i.e. someone been caught in the shot.

Thank you for coming to see us today and from one photographer to another i look forward to seeing what you have in-store next for us to see.

Social media

Looking at social media, websites such as the likes of facebook, and twitter, raise some interesting questions as to the capabilities of news media been able to keep pace with these networking giants. These social networking mazes of people give them unlimited resources and unlimited numbers of people to report the most current news from across the globe, comparing this with news media shows how primative these organsations have become at been the leading reporters on news at speed.
However this also raises the question of the reliability in the truthfulness of what site such as twitter reports,
The latest example of this is the news posted on twitter over the weekend of the ”death of Mick Jagger” which was then accurately snubbed by his PR.
This cleary shows it may be faster to get news from social media, however it may not always be as accurate as news media.
